As Nigeria marks 60 years as a sovereign nation, the Federal Government has been advised to convene a Sovereign National Conference to chart the way forward in the interest of the unity of the country.
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, made the call in Makurdi, the state capital, during the interdenominational independence Thanksgiving Service to mark the occasion.
Nigeria’s 60th Independence Day is a moment for celebration for some, while for others, it is a time for self-reflection.
In Benue State, the occasion was a bit solemn, as it began with a church service featuring prayers for the country and her leaders.
Some were quite vocal on their thoughts about the country’s 60 years on.
Chairman of the Benue chapter of the Christian Association of Nigerian, CAN, Akpen Leva, was really expressive about unpopular policies that threaten the security and unity of the country which he said must be done away with.

He, therefore, urged the Federal Government to take deliberate steps towards genuine national integration that will ensure a feeling of belonging among the diverse ethnic nationalities in the country.
