Senate Approves Creation of South West Development Commission

The Nigerian Senate has approved the formation of the South West Development Commission (SWDC).

This decision follows consideration and adoption of the report the Senate Committee on Special Duties report chaired by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan.

In his presentation, Senator Kaka outlined that the Commission will oversee the receipt and management of funds from the Federation Account, as well as donations and gifts, aimed at reconstructing and rehabilitating infrastructure in the region.

According to him, the Commission will address ecological, environmental, and other developmental challenges facing the South West.

The Senate thereafter entered a committee of the whole for a clause-by-clause review of the bill, which was subsequently read for the third time.

Following the bill’s passage, Deputy President of the Senate Barau Jibrin, who presided over plenary, praised the committee’s efforts.

He emphasized that the SWDC, like other recently established commissions, will focus on resolving infrastructural and ecological issues in the region.

The establishment of these various development commissions aims to accelerate nationwide development.

President Bola Tinubu has already signed similar bills for the South East, North East, and North Central Development Commissions.
