A bill seeking full financial and administrative autonomy for Local Governments in the country has scaled second reading on the floor of the Nigerian Senate.
The bill sponsored by Senator Ahmad Keita is one of 9 other provisions for amendments of the 1999 Constitution.
Other proposed amendments include a bill to give immunity to federal lawmakers for words spoken or written at plenary, and a bill to prevent the Federal High Court from entertaining pre-election disputes.
The Senate however did not throw the proposed amendments open for debate before referring them to its Committee on Constitution Amendment for further legislative action.
