The Association of Senior citizens fisheries in the south-south has staged a protest at the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, against the non-implementation of an agreement reached with some oil companies in the region to compensate them for over 22 years of oil spillage damages.

Speaking to ait.live in Abuja, they said the destruction occasioned by the companies’ facilities has destroyed their fishing business leading to life-threatening health issues for some members as over 12 have died.

Receiving the petition on behalf of the Executive secretary of the commission, the Director, Corporate affairs and external linkages department, Halima Oyedele, assured the senior citizens that their request will be thoroughly investigated for justice to prevail.

They promised to keep pushing for their demand until their business is back on track to provide for their families’ wellbeing.
