Works have commenced at the turf of the main bowl of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium Port Harcourt following the approval by the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike for the Rehabilitation and renovation of the facility to a befitting status.
The Rivers state commissioner for sports,Boma Iyaye and the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Sports Honour Sirawoo said the turf when completely renovated will host local and international matches.
The Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex has played host to several events from religious, politics and sports in the past but the undulating nature of the pitch at the main bowl has made it difficult for international matches to be played. That will soon be a thing of the past as renovation work has commenced on the turf to give it a facelift and be used for major local and international sporting activities.
Rivers state sports commissioner,Boma Iyaye said the choice of Adokiye Amiesimaka was possible because the Yakubu Gowon stadium is currently being used as a treatment centre for COVID 19.
