Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri this Tuesday received the Unity Torch ahead of the 20th National Sports Festival billed for Edo State in April this year.
Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo who represented the Governor at the Peace Park, Yenagoa, expressed hope of the State emerging overall best in this year’s edition as athletes and sports enthusiasts swarmed the streets on the arrival of the Unity Torch from Rivers State.
The Bayelsa State Deputy Governor was on ground to receive the Unity Torch from officials of the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development.
He says sports no doubt has become a veritable tool in unifying the country and engaging the youths meaningfully and therefore assured of the State’s support.
The athletes are optimistic that the contingent to represent Bayelsa State at the festival would rake in more medals than their previous outing two years ago when they placed fifth on the overall medals table.
The Bayelsa State athletes are in camp putting finishing touches to their preparations.
Meanwhile, the Unity Torch is expected to proceed to Delta State, South-south Nigeria.
