FG feeds 8.6 million pupils in 35 states – Minister

The Federal Government has flagged off the National Home Grown Feeding School Programme in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, targeted at 122, 300 pupils from class 1 to 3.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, at the ceremony in Abuja on Friday, said 8.6 million pupils in 35 states are currently registered under the programme.

From the rising economic and security challenges in the country and a number of Nigerians in dire need of support, the Federal Government introduced a special intervention programme in 2016, to restore livelihood, economic opportunities, and sustenance for indigents Nigerians through the N-Power, National Social Safety Net Programme, Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, GEEP, and the Home-Grown Feeding Programme.

According to the Federal Government, the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme is targeting 8.6 million in 35 states including the FCT as the most recent beneficiaries of the programme.

The National Home-Grown Feeding School Programme, aside providing one free nutritional meal for children, is said to also generate employment.

The Home-Grown Feeding School Programme commenced in the FCT on November 25, 2019, feeding 73,060 pupils a meal per day worth N70,000 is targeted at feeding 122, 300.
