Nyesom Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says his administration is committed to initiating a digital security monitoring and control system.

The minister said that the digital security monitoring and control system will also be integrated into the existing transport management system in the FCT, to ensure the safety and security of commuters, without compromising affordability or efficiency of services.

Wike said this in Abuja at the FCT 2023 Special Marshals Sectoral Workshop, with the theme, “Volunteerism in Road Safety Management: Limits and Possibilities.”

Road Traffic crashes have remained the leading cause of death in Nigeria, while overspeeding, overloading, reckless driving and others have been identified as the most common causes, a menace which key players in the road safety sector have continued to kick against.

The sectoral workshop is, therefore, an avenue to review activities, analyse them, and come up with possible solutions that would impact the reduction of crashes on Nigerian roads.

The Minister of FCT, who was represented by the Hon. Mandate Secretary for Transportation, Ubokutom Nyah, said his administration will continue to relate with critical key players in the road safety sector, to help achieve the core mandate.

The Corps Marshal, of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu, urged everyone to exhibit the highest level of discipline while carrying out their responsibilities, in the eradication of road traffic crashes.

The Chairman of the occasion, Nathan Egbereonu, and the FCT State Coordinator Special Marshals, Sanni Adisa, advised Nigerians, especially motorists, to ensure that road safety across the country is a success, despite the challenges.

The Special Marshals are the volunteer arm of the Federal Road Safety Corps, established to carry out patrols and other activities, that ensure good road usage on the Nigerian highways.
