The West African Examination Council, WAEC, has announced the release of results of the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, for school candidates.
Addressing newsmen in Yaba, Lagos, on Monday, Head of the Nigerian National Office of WAEC, Patrick Areghan, said of the one million, five hundred and thirty-eight thousand four hundred and forty-five candidates that sat for the examination, one million, three hundred and thirty-eight thousand three hundred and forty-eight candidates, obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects with or without English Language and/ or Mathematics.
He further explained that 1,003,668 candidates obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Areghan said the latest results indicates a marginal 1.06 per cent improvement in performance of candidates compared to last year’s results.
The results of 215,149 candidates are withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice, which according to Areghan, are being investigated, and reports of the investigations would be presented to the appropriate Committee of the Council for determination in due course.

The 2020 WASSCE, which was earlier scheduled to commence on 6th April 2020 could not hold as a result of the outbreak of the novel COVID-19 pandemic but after intensive discussions with relevant authorities, the examination finally commenced on 17th August 2020 and ended on 12th September 2020, spanning a period of four weeks.
